How to use the 211 Database

The 211 database can be used to search for information on public, government, and not-for-profit organizations in Edmonton and some surrounding communities. Follow these guidelines to maximize the effectiveness of your search.

Search by Agency  or Program Name

Enter the name you are looking for in the topmost box, and press “Submit” to search

Try adding or removing spaces if you do not see what you are looking for

Ex. “BusLink” vs. “Bus Link”

If you are unsure of the full name or of proper spelling, using partial words may be useful

Ex. “Alzh” will display information on the Alzheimer Society of Alberta

Ex. “Ote” will display information on Oteenow Employment and Training Society

Search by Keyword

Keywords are useful if you are looking for resources on a particular topic

Ex. “shelters”

Ex. “upgrading”

Combine multiple Keywords to narrow your results even further

Ex. “youth shelters”

Ex. “disabled employment”

Try different variations if you don’t see what you need

Ex. “Food” vs. “Hunger” vs. “Meals”

Ex. “Jobs” vs. “Employment”

Use a Keyword with a Name search to narrow results further

Ex. Name: “Community”, Keyword: “Counseling”

Ex. Name: “Aboriginal”, Keyword: “Employment”

Use Criteria to receive more accurate results (target audience, city or town, language, or fee type)

Narrow by age range to find resources for youth, adults, seniors, or disabled individuals

Use Fee Type to find free or sliding-scale options for low-income individuals

Criteria will reduce the number of search results significantly, so try searching without them to start
